management made me take another course on me weekend.. this time about working efficiently (lean, 6 sigma) ill be getting a certificate and everything (oooo fancy)

anyhoo.. as management thinks we’re all of grade school inteligence they had us illustrate the lesson with lego... had to set up a work order of legos (representing gas burners) and make the whole process as efficient as possible (we even had product drawings for said lego burners)

Kinja'd!!!

shit was hilarious... more of that please

i just got paid $35 an hour to go play with legos for 4 hours.... noice

and they’re planning to hold a ceremony for the handing out of certificates during working hours too

because trust management to truly understand the concept of efficiency (and then throw it right out the window)

have a cute little snow ploug

You know, I took courses in college about lean and 6 sigma.  And it seems like it’s just a bunch of hogwash to me.  Companies shouldn’t need to learn lean and 6 sigma, they should already be doing it.

it is pretty obvious

and thats why we dont do it... i blame management and the s.o.ps they come up with

(they also wrote up the machine instructions... i tried following the book the other day and if you follow it step by step the machine wont even start up... surprising really considering the people that wrote the booklet have never used the machine)

It is hogwash. It was a marketing concept that gotten eaten up by upper management. I have my master black belt in it and a few months after management completely squashed the program.

Waste of time and money.

You got to play with Legos!? My lean/6 sigma was putting colored stickers on papers with outlines for them...

Many years ago, when total quality management was the thing, everyone in the 30 person, family-owned company I worked for had to sit in a 4 day class (one class/ week for four hours). T his was set up by the boss’ son, the “Vice President in charge of sales”. After four weeks, we learned what we already knew: all of the errors and waste were attributed to the family that owned the company. This was despite them making sure at least one member was in every class, to see if anyone spoke out of turn...  after trying it for two weeks, TQM was never spoken of again...

I’ve experienced various flavors of process improvement at several companies throughout my career. The concepts are reasonable and when done right can create some positive changes. The problem is darn few companies (and none I have worked for) have executive management that understand that you can’t do process improvement right if your goal is to save X amount of money. Look for processes that are clearly broken and apply the concepts. You will likely find ways to make it better, which is great. But as soon as you make a dollar figure the target, you’ve lost. In the back of everyone’s mind will be “what management really wants is to eliminate my job” and nobody will participate.

This is one of the reasons I left the last company I worked for. There were are few things we did that just struck me as terribly inefficient. And literally down the street was another business that did the same thing, but more efficiently. You could SEE it, and when I drive by the two places I STILL see the same stuff happening.

It drives me nuts and I left 4 years ago

Currently in a Quality Management class , professor harps on six sigma/lean constantly, interesting to see what those in the workforce think of it (Both you and those in the comments)
